The Dream of Ichiran at Home! Reviewing the Talk-of-the-Town Cup Ramen!
I couldn’t believe I could finally enjoy the taste of Ichiran so easily at home! I finally found and tried the much-discussed cup ramen, “Ichiran Tonkotsu.” Honestly, I had mixed feelings of excitement and skepticism about how well it could replicate the restaurant’s flavor, but here is my full report!
🍥Checking the Packaging and Contents
The familiar design features the iconic red and green colors. Inside, I found three essential packets: powdered soup base, liquid soup base, and the indispensable “Original Spicy Red Sauce” (Aka-i Hiden no Tare). This premium setup is typical of high-end cup noodles.
Just like in the restaurant, there’s a straightforward message: “We intentionally do not include any toppings.” This reflects Ichiran’s commitment to having you focus purely on the quality of the noodles and the soup.
🍜Cooking & Tasting! How’s the Soup and Noodle Texture?
After pouring in the hot water and waiting a few minutes (I like my noodles “firm” at the restaurant, so I lifted the lid a little early!), it was time to eat.
- The Soup: I took a sip first. Oh…! A rich, yet surprisingly clean, mellow, and elegant tonkotsu (pork bone) richness filled my mouth. The depth of flavor goes far beyond that of a typical cup noodle. I was truly impressed by how closely it recreates the flavor of the restaurant’s soup.
- The Noodles: Next, the noodles. The non-fried thin, straight noodles with low hydration are incredibly authentic for a cup noodle! They have a nice, snappy bite and cling perfectly to the rich soup. While they can’t match fresh noodles, I was truly amazed at the technology required to achieve this texture in a cup.
🌶️Flavor Transformation with the “Original Spicy Red Sauce”!
Finally, the moment I’d been waiting for: adding the “Original Spicy Red Sauce.”
I started by dissolving just half of the packet. The soup was instantly enhanced by a spicy kick, a touch of sweetness, and a unique savory depth. This tare (sauce) truly tightens up the flavor profile. Be careful if you can’t handle spice, but adding the whole packet gives it a fantastic punch and boosts the authentic feeling.
I ended up adding all of it and thoroughly enjoyed the changing flavor. It’s just so addictive!
💡Overall Rating and Final Thoughts
While the price is certainly higher than your average cup noodle, I believe the richness of the soup and the quality of the noodles make it entirely worth the cost. For fans who live far from an actual Ichiran restaurant, being able to enjoy this flavor easily at home is a huge treat.
Whether you’re already an Ichiran fan or have yet to try the flavor, I highly recommend giving this a try to experience the next level of cup noodle evolution!
It was a fantastic meal! It was hard to resist the urge to drop rice into the leftover soup (lol).
